The MODBUS MICRON DataMet E-FORCE caliper external knife-edge jaws is a computerized precision caliper for external and internal dimensional measurement over ranges up to 600 mm. Long jaws and narrow external knife-edge geometry provide access to recessed, stepped and restricted external features, while electronic 1–20 N E-FORCEcontrols contact force. The MODBUS version adds RS-485 MODBUS RTU data output for integration into industrial measurement and control systems while retaining Wireless and USB HID data transfer.

Description
PRODUCT
Three measuring ranges are available:
- 0–300 mm / 0–12″ — ±12 μm accuracy, 60/40 mm jaws
- 0–500 mm / 0–20″ — ±15 μm accuracy, 100/30 mm jaws
- 0–600 mm / 0–24″ — ±18 μm accuracy, 100/30 mm jaws
All versions provide 0.0005 mm resolution with selectable indication of 0.0005 / 0.001 / 0.01 / 0.1 mm.
The long jaws position the measuring contacts farther from the caliper beam, allowing dimensions located deeper on a workpiece to be reached. The external jaws use a knife-edge geometry, creating a narrow contact profile for measurement close to shoulders, steps and surrounding geometry where conventional broad measuring faces can obstruct correct contact.
The upper jaws incorporate measuring tips for internal dimensions above 10 mm.
An electronic E-FORCE control module provides selectable measuring force from 1 to 20 N, force indication, color force status and AUTO-FORCE mode. This allows the measuring force to be adapted to the workpiece instead of relying only on the operator’s hand pressure.
The computerized MICS system uses a 2.0″ color touchscreen, CNC-machined solid aluminium housing and IP54 protection.

CONNECTIVITY & DATA
The MODBUS version adds a dedicated industrial data interface while retaining the standard DataMet transfer modes.
Built-in data-transfer modes:
- Wireless transfer to the MDS app for Windows, Android, iOS and macOS
- Wireless HID
- Wireless HID + MAC
- USB HID
- MODBUS RTU
The MODBUS RTU interface uses RS-485, 4-wire connection with 5–24 V, GND, A and B lines. It allows caliper readings to be incorporated directly into equipment and systems using the MODBUS RTU protocol instead of requiring the operator to manually read and re-enter each measured value.
MODBUS ASCII and MODBUS TCP/IP are available as options.
WHERE IS IT USED AND WHAT TASKS DOES IT SOLVE?
- Recessed external dimensions → the required measuring surfaces are located farther from the edge of the component → conventional short jaws cannot reach the measurement position → 60/40 or 100/30 mm long jaws extend the measuring contacts into the required area.
- External dimensions beside shoulders or steps → wide conventional jaw faces can contact adjacent geometry before reaching the required surface → knife-edge external jaws provide a narrow contact profile for positioning close to the geometric obstruction.
- Internal dimensions above 10 mm → the measurement requires contact inside an opening rather than across an external surface → upper measuring tips provide the required internal measuring geometry.
- Components requiring controlled contact force → different workpieces can react differently to excessive or inconsistent measuring pressure → selectable 1–20 N E-FORCE allows the force to be defined and monitored during measurement.
- Repeated inspection with tolerance limits → the operator must determine immediately whether each measured value is acceptable → color GO / NOGO indication provides direct tolerance evaluation on the touchscreen.
- Measurements integrated into industrial equipment → readings must be transferred directly from the caliper into an external system instead of being manually recorded → the RS-485 MODBUS RTU interface provides an industrial data-output path for automated measurement-data handling.
WHAT PROBLEM DOES IT SOLVE?
A conventional caliper can be unsuitable when the target dimension is located deep on a component, immediately beside a shoulder or within restricted geometry. Standard jaw faces may be too short or too wide to establish the required contact.
The extended knife-edge jaws solve the access problem, while E-FORCE addresses the separate problem of uncontrolled measuring pressure by allowing force from 1 to 20 N to be selected and monitored.
For repeated or integrated inspection, the MODBUS version also addresses manual measurement-data handling. Measurement results can be transferred through MODBUS RTU directly to compatible industrial systems, while Wireless and USB HID remain available for conventional digital data transfer.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The workpiece is positioned between the appropriate measuring surfaces. For external measurement, the long knife-edge jaws are moved onto the required external features; for internal measurement above 10 mm, the upper measuring tips contact the internal surfaces.
The operator selects the required measuring force within the 1–20 N E-FORCE range. The electronic system displays the applied force and uses color indication to show its status, while AUTO-FORCE mode supports force-controlled measurement.
The Swiss-made reading system determines jaw displacement and displays the result on the 2.0″ touchscreen at the selected resolution. The measurement can then be evaluated with tolerance, MAX/MIN, formula, timer or compensation functions, stored in the 2000-value memory, or transferred through Wireless, USB HID or MODBUS RTU.
